Summertime

The delights of summer...

Zucchini going bonkers. I planted four plants expecting to lose some - but they are all growing like crazy.

This is today's zucchini harvest. There will be more tomorrow. Anyone want zukes?

The storm yesterday brought little rain but lots of wind and blew down some of the corn. Do you think it will survive?

Sourdough pizza crust topped with zucchini, peppers, and our first tomato. Yum!

The chicks delight in an old broccoli plant. If only they liked to eat weeds, we could clean up our garden.

The children have been pretending to sail a boat. An upturned bench, stick, old shirt, and, of course, a map is all that is needed to sail the far seas in their imaginations.

The younger two had to join in by transforming the picnic table into their pleasure boat.

Good food, fun times - does it get any better than summer?

  4. I feed my chickens the weeds from the garden....just wish they could pull them. I've missed a few zucchini during my daily harvest and have thrown the zucchini boats in the chicken pen. The chickens seem to enjoy them too! When the grandkids get back I can let them make boats to sail out of any more over grown zukes. The creek is dry so I will have to invent a new place to sail them.

  5. We don't seem to be getting a summer here in the UK. Its a shame because Little Son isn't getting much outdoor time. Your pizza looks really tasty - bet its lovely with the food so fresh from the garden. xxx

  6. Yum...I'd take some zukes off your hands, Gina LOL! Looks like you need a few bunnies and guinea pigs. They make for great mini-munchers and eat all those veg that bolt to seed etc. ...so nothing's wasted. I remember those days of amazing imagination well...enjoy them. They are precious and gone before you know it!

I'll bring some zukes for you. Maybe it will help me remember to bring back your pan! Looking forward to seeing you again.

  9. I love when kids play simple like that. Mine do too. Their imaginations running as wild as those zukes. (smile!)

If I lived closer I'd take a couple. I just pulled up a recipe to make a Lemon-Zucchini Loaf with Lemon Glaze. By www.nancycreative.com I can't wait to give it a try.

Someone here, local, gave me a couple of HUGE zucchini...

I'm sorry we are not close enough to hand zucchini over the fence! I don't think you'd want to drive this far just for squash!

  11. I love it. I've been reading "The Way Home" by Mary Pride, a book whose burden is for wives to be the joyful 'home workers' they were created to be...to love their children, etc. This post encouraged me, as I see you doing just that.
God bless you, Gina, and happy summer.

  12. Your zucchini looks great! Mine have not been doing well for several years now even though I have moved locations. I am lucky to get one decent squash off all season. My corn has done the same thing as yours in the storms recently. I took and tried to stand them back up and pack the dirt around the base with my foot. All but the biggest ones stayed straight and continued to grow. The ones that did lean back over, the sun straightened up somewhat. But they all lived and are growing. Your kids look like they are having a blast! I wish I could send mine out to play but in high 90s and 100s with no shade in the yard, that would be too much.

  13. I just took a double batch of Zucchini Relish out of your Grandmother's pressure canner. Last year was the first I planted Z and didn't get enough. I have 8-10 stalks this year and they all made it. Some are very seedy even when very small, I'm wondering if that's the dry weather?

I didn't know you still had Grandma's canner! I'm glad it is still in use!

Are your zucchini the same variety? I have one plant that is much seedier than the others and I know it is a different variety. Maybe dry weather would have an affect. Hope you are getting some rain today.
